Stories from the Humanitarian Response to the Syrian Refugee Crisis

In June 2017, the Hilton Prize Coalition Storytelling Program traveled through Lebanon and Serbia to connect with several Coalition member organizations serving the most vulnerable communities among the millions of displaced men, women and children seeking refuge in places of safety.

The resulting stories are the basis of this Hilton Prize Coalition Storytelling project, a series of short films and collected footage that provide a glimpse of what humanitarian work looks like today. The films and collected footage focus on a few days in the life of staff at a select number of Laureate organizations working in the region.

Refuge: Humanity & Inclusion

In Lebanon, the former Head of Mission at Humanity & Inclusion and his mobile teams of physiotherapists and social workers care for the injured and disabled who would otherwise have no access to treatment.

This film was shot in the spring of 2017, when Humanity & Inclusion was still operating under the name “Handicap International.” Since that time, the Lebanon team has also welcomed a new head of mission.

Refuge: HelpAge International

Also in Lebanon, the HelpAge International team and their local partners provide support for the particular needs of older community members and their families. Older community members are often isolated due to a physical impairment or due to a fear of leaving their informal settlements without legal permits. HelpAge ensures these older persons have access to treatment.

Refuge: International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT)

The last stop in Lebanon follows the redoubtable Dr. Sana Hamzeh, Clinical Director of The Restart Center, a member of the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) in Beirut and Tripoli.  In session after session, Dr.Hamzeh, her team of psychologists, and the patients in their care recount details of their sometimes unimaginable suffering and resilience.

Refuge: SOS Children's Villages

Teams from SOS Children’s Villages work at the European end of the refugee trail. In the transit camps bordering the European Union, the organization steps in to provide a safe and nurturing space, not only for children but for the whole family.

The blog series highlights the collaboration that took place among Laureates and features insights into the filming process in Lebanon and Syria.
